Brutalization: The Dangerous Construction of Whiteness

Another week, another video--this time of a young African American woman wearing a bathing suit, holding only a towel. She is thrown to the ground and a white male police officer pulls her hair and sits on her back.

The United States is in the midst of a moral crisis--a nearly continuous brutalization of black bodies as a performance of white privilege. It has to be named as a profound wrong, and it has to be stopped.

Moral uproar, but is anyone listening?

WITH CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AT RISK IN ISRAEL, CRICKETS FROM AMERICAN CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES

Last week, Christianity Today ran a piece headlined, “Why Christian Education in Israel Could Vanish.” The reason? “Funding discrimination” by Israel’s Ministry of Education:

The ministry provides 100 percent funding for 200,000 ultra-Orthodox students in religious, nonpublic schools. Israeli Christians believe this is unfair treatment since Israeli national law prohibits discrimination in education. “In a challenging time like this for Christians in the whole Middle East, we expect Israel to deal with this identity matter of Christians in a sensitive way,” said Botrus Mansour, director of Nazareth Baptist, a K-12 school that is nationally recognized for excellent instruction. Christian school administrators want the ministry to fully fund recognized Christian schools.

Israeli discrimination is not mentioned very often.

Why the Oldest Qur'an Is so Important for Muslims

The most important miracle in Islam is located in Birmingham, United Kingdom. On Wednesday, the headline of the New York Times and BBC was that researchers at the University of Birmingham discovered fragments from the oldest copy of the Holy Qur'an. In one of those rare accidental discoveries, a PhD student found the fragments buried in a university library. An Oxford laboratory found the manuscript to be at least 1370 years old, dating it to the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

How High Can Pakistan’s Air Force Women Fly?

Flight Lt. Ayesha Farooq, Pakistan’s only combat-ready female air force pilot, has become both an international celebrity and a symbol of a new Pakistan, where women are breaking barriers and taking on roles traditionally closed to them. Yet Pakistan is also known as a country where women’s place in society yo-yos up and down. For example, in the 1990s it entrusted the leadership of the entire nation to Benazir Bhutto while still resisting girls’ education and advances in women’s rights.

Given this contradictory attitude, how far can Pakistan’s female air force officers expect to go?

Four-legged snake discovered

Scientists have dis-covered a 113 million-year-old fossil of a snake which has four legs with fingers and toes.The Tetrapodophis amplectus - nicknamed 'huggy snake' - is the first evidence found of a four-legged snake.The 20cm-long skeleton has a tiny head the size of a human fingernail. It has two very small front legs with wrists, elbows and hands and slightly longer back legs, which would have been used to grasp its prey.
