450-Year-Old Church Emerges From Reservoir As Water Levels Drop

The church was built in 1564 and abandoned two centuries later.
A drought in southern Mexico has caused water levels to fall so much that the remains of a long-abandoned, 16th-century church are now visible above the waterline.
The Temple of Santiago, also known as the Temple of Quechula, normally rests under nearly 100 feet of water since the completion of a dam in 1966 created the Nezahualcoyotl reservoir in Chiapas. But the drought has caused water levels to drop by more than 80 feet, leading to eerie sights such as this one:

For William Hwang, an educator who lives in San Diego, the langar was more than a shared meal. It was a form of spiritual fellowship that "feeds your body and feeds your soul."
A volunteer approached Hwang at one point and asked if he was done eating. Even though he was, Hwang gripped the plate for a moment, reluctant to be waited on. The volunteer smiled, looked in his eyes and said, "It's okay. Let me serve you."
Scientists Recover First Genome of Ancient Human From Africa
A team of scientists reported on Thursday that it had recovered the genome from a 4,500-year-old human skeleton in Ethiopia — the first time a complete assemblage of DNA has been retrieved from an ancient human in Africa.
The DNA of the Ethiopian fossil is strikingly different from that of living Africans. Writing in the journal Science, the researchers conclude that people from the Near East spread into Africa 3,000 years ago. In later generations, their DNA ended up scattered across the continent.
“It’s a major milestone for the field,” said Joseph Pickrell, an expert on ancient DNA at the New York Genome Center who was not involved in the study. For decades, scientists had doubted that ancient DNA could survive in the tropics. The study raises hopes that scientists can recover far older human genomes from Africa — perhaps dating back a million years or more.
