Three Muslim Americans were murdered on Tuesday in a University of North Carolina dorm room. . . Western media outlets will likely frame the most recent perpetrator of what some speculate is an anti-Muslim crime in the same way they frame most anti-Muslim criminals - as crazed, misguided bigots who acted alone. . . . But what if acts of anti-Muslim violence are consistent with at least some strands of current western ideology?

A Muslim woman is accused of blasphemy, sacked by her employers, dragged through police stations and courts, and is forced to go underground in the face of a vicious hate campaign, including death threats.
This is not a story from the badlands of Waziristan, and her tormentors are not the sharia-enforcing Taliban. It is happening right in the heart of modern India — in cosmopolitan Mumbai, to be precise — with our own Taliban leading the show.

A sad irony of the Pakistani state is that when one of its citizens is awarded an international prize, he or she is often dubbed a part of some larger conspiracy against the state: from Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who won the Lenin Peace Prize in 1962; to Abdus Salam, who was awarded the Noble Prize for Physics in 1979; and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who received the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2012. Now, Malala Yousafzai, Pakistan’s most recent Noble prize winner, is being castigated on the same charges.
