Was Jesus the Son of God? It's Complicated

Most of us who teach in the field of Christian Origins get asked from time to time by students or in public lectures, "Professor, Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God?" As it turns out, the question, like all historical queries, is more complicated than meets the eye.

CANTERBURY, England (RNS) Prominent artists and human rights campaigners have criticized the National Youth Theatre in London for canceling a play because its theme is the radicalization of young British Muslims and their attraction to terrorist organizations such as the militant Islamic State group.

Muslim elected president of student wing of prominent pro-Israel group

WASHINGTON, D.C. (RNS) A young Muslim woman has been elected as the head of the student arm of J Street, a liberal pro-Israel organization.
Amna Farooqi, 21, a Pakistani-American and a senior at the University of Maryland, says she loves Israel, cares deeply about Palestinians and sees nothing contradictory in a Muslim advocating for the Jewish state.
Growing up in a Muslim home in Potomac, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C., with a heavily Jewish population, Farooqi said she took on her family’s sympathy for Palestinians under Israeli occupation in the West Bank. She also made many Jewish friends and grew comfortable in Jewish culture. She decided in college that she didn’t understand the Israeli viewpoint on the Palestinian crisis and immersed herself in Israel study courses, including a semester at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Not Just News

By Daniel K. Eisenbud,

A mysterious ancient message dating to the Second Temple Period has been discovered on a well-preserved ritual bath (mikve) in Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced on Wednesday.

The mikve, from the First Century CE, was found in an underground cave at the construction site of two nursery schools in the Arnona Quarter two months ago, IAA spokeswoman Yoli Shwartz said.

New parrot species found hiding in plain sight

This is a male Cape ParrotPhoto by: Poicephalus robustus

Sometimes, discovering new animal species requires spending years venturing deep into the wilderness. But other times, a new species can be found hiding in plain sight.
The Cape Parrot, a largish bird native to the forests of South Africa, has long been considered,  along with the brown-necked parrot and the grey-headed parrot, to be a subspecies of Poicephalus robustus. But a genetic analysis suggests that the Cape Parrot is its own distinct species, one that resulted from natural selection and not breeding.

Malala Yousafzai, the teen who was shot by the Taliban for advocating for girls' education, will be celebrating a string of academic successes this week.
On Friday, Ms. Yousafzai's father took to Twitter to announce that his award winning daughter had received excellent scores on her GCSEs, an important exam taken by all British teenagers. The 18-year-old who once dodged bullets in Pakistan to attend school, can now boast of a string of As, placing her within the top tier of students who took the exam.

Scott Walker Says There Are A 'Handful Of Reasonable, Moderate Followers Of Islam'

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) admitted Friday that not every Muslim in the world is a terrorist, saying there are a "handful" of "reasonable" people out there.
An attendee at Walker's event in Derby, New Hampshire, noted that President Barack Obama's administration tends to avoid characterizing the fight against terrorism as a fight against Islam.
